Getting Started with Visual Studio Code Online and GitHub

In this lesson, you will learn how to create a new repository on GitHub using Visual Studio Code online. To start, go to GitHub.com and log in to your account if you haven't already done so. If you are new to GitHub, you can sign up for an account here.

Once logged in, click the 'New' button at the top right corner of the page. This will take you to a page where you can create a new repository. Click on the green 'Create repository' button at the bottom of the page.

Give your repository a name by filling out the repository name input field. For this example, let's call it 'git_test'. You can choose any name that is relevant to your project or use a generic name like 'my-repo'.

If you haven't already, make sure you have set your local default git branch to main. This means that you need to be using a recent version of git (2.28 or later). Also, note that GitHub has recently updated the way it names the default branch.
